Matters matter too

Ne ho avuto una prova tangibile: la forcella della mia vecchia bici da passeggio era davvero arrivata al capolinea. Vado dal ciclista (in questo caso il riparatore di bici, nella terza accezione del termine secondo il Dizionario De Mauro) del mio paese e mi chiede 50 euro per sostituirla. La bici era stata acquistata, a suo tempo, a 200 euro: qual era la convenienza della sua sostituzione? Nessuna. Rigenerarla, visto che funzionava benissimo, sembrava opera antieconomica per lui. Ovvio, ci avrebbe messo almeno mezza giornata, quindi il costo sarebbe stato perfino superiore a quello della sua sostituzione. Ma qualcosa da Rotafixa l’ho già imparato, ovvero mi sto leggendo Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen, così, consapevole del fatto che in base al secondo principio della termodinamica e ad altre leggi del processo economico ogni materia si degrada (matters matter too), mi sono rimboccato le maniche e ho cominciato a sporcarmi le mani di grasso. La mia forcella è tornata a vivere, più brillante di prima: sto semplicemente applicando le leggi della bioeconomia.

I had a proof: the fork of my old bike was really in bad shape. I went to the workshop and the man asked me 50 euros to replace it. The bike was purchased at that time for 200 euros: what was the advantage of its replacement? None. To regenerate it, because it worked very well, seemed to be for him uneconomical. Obviously, it would have taken for him at least half a day, then the cost would have been even higher than that of its replacement. But something from Rotafixa I have learned. I'm reading Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen thus I’m now aware of the fact that under the second principle of thermodynamics and other laws of the economic process degrades each subject (matter matters too), so I tucked up my sleeves and started to soil my hands with grease. My fork has to go back to live, the more brilliant than before: I'm simply applying the laws of Bioeconomy.
