The Bicycle Academy

The Bicycle Academy - Crowd Funding from The Bicycle Academy on Vimeo.
The Bicycle Academy is a new enterprise providing people with the skills and facilities to design and make their own bikes. Frame building will be taught by the legendary Brian Curtis short weekday courses. As part of the learning process each student will make a frame designed specifically for use in Africa. Once graduated students will be able to use The Bicycle Academy workshop to hone their skills and build their own frames.

David Byrne Bikes @ Urban Velo

When I was a wee lass and David Byrne was fronting The Talking Heads I thought he was a big ‘ol geeky nerd and wanted nothing to do with him, but as I matured I came to appreciate his musical and cultural genius. Then add to that his involvement and promotion of bicycles and I was sold. I knew about his book The Bicycle Diaries, which is now available as an audiobook/T-shirt combo, but I wasn’t aware of so many other projects he has contributed to bike culture and city life in general.

Designed for changeable conditions, the ultrafit shape and the stretch fabric also ensure a sharp and versatile look: you can even transform the jacket in a waistcoast, thanks to the detachable sleeves, to keep your body warm only where it serves.

DiNucci cycles

Over the last 40 years I have focused on only one thing, designing and building the best bicycles possible. Starting as one of the earliest US framebuilders in the 1970’s, I specialized in handmade frames for road and track and continued that work through the mid 80’s when I turned to designing production bikes for some of the biggest brands in cycling.

Pietro Piazzalunga, Mechanic to Champions

Pietro Piazzalunga is a very kind and modest man. He possesses a temperament that that Italians call "dolcezza". This word doesn't translate well into English. It conveys a sense of considerate kindness and sweetness without meaning effeminate. As you read this interview you will see that he has a kind word to say about everyone and everything. That's just his way. He is so self-effacing that in meeting him for the first time one would not think that he was one of the finest mechanics in the history of cycling.

Gary Fisher’s house

Can mountain and commuter bikes live together peacefully in the same garage? They do at Gary Fisher’s house. One of Marin County’s original gangster progenitors of mountain bikes (he and business partner Charlie Kelly coined the term as the name of their bike company, MountainBikes, in 1979), Fisher was racing competitively from the age of 12 in cyclocross and on and off-road events. He now works in design and marketing for his eponymous label at Trek. But a funny thing happened in 2007….

Cane Creek by Dirt Mag

Located on a rural roadside outside the small town of Fletcher, NC — and about twenty minutes due south of the hipster haven of Asheville — is the headquarters of component manufacturer Cane Creek. A passing cyclist could easily overlook the long, non-descript cement building, if not for the plethora of bikes sitting atop roof racks in the parking lot, loaded in anticipation of an after-work ride. Telai veramente Strong

Zullo bikes

In 1994, Zullo would move into the production of tig-welded aluminium frames. Eventually this would lead to the production of combined aluminium/carbon frames. In 2003, Zullo was able to offer made-to-measure full carbon frames. Nowadays, Tiziano Zullo is still involved in the production of some, mainly steel frames. Alongside this, he is still responsible for all the frame graphics and some of the frame painting. www.zullo-bike.com

Rouleur #27

If there is a theme to this issue, then it is one of transformation.
Fritz Gallati was the first professional to be stripped of his licence and banned from racing for doping offences in a scandal that rocked Switzerland in 1961. Herbie Sykes unravels the plot behind the former Six-Day rider’s story while Fritz applies the greasepaint. Ben Ingham captures the tears of a clown on camera.

Vertigo cycles

Your Builder :: Sean Chaney
It was only a matter of time before all my obsessive tinkering, modification and design brought me to the logical point of building titanium bicycle frames. Now I'm trying harder than ever to give my inner nerd free reign to create great riding and aesthetically pleasing bicycles . A visually simple design is often surprisingly difficult to execute.

David Kirk, framebuilder

I've been working in the bike industry since I was in high school and I always wanted to be a frame builder. I've worked in shops and raced BMX, road and mountain bikes over the years.
When I was about 14, I built my first bike frame with my grandfather Ernie King. It was a suspension BMX frame. It broke.

Veloflex, handmade in Italy
